Denis Billi, arms folded, smiling
Latest innovation SCM Group Innovations Award 2025 — machine learning applied to CNC path optimisation.

I build software for machines that cannot afford to be wrong: CNC controllers, HMI systems, CAD/CAM toolchains — and, more recently, the AI that sits on top of them. Twenty years of C++, C# and Python in industrial production, three patents, and a standing suspicion of anything that only works in the demo.

whoami --verbose

  • Senior software engineer with 20+ years of experience, based in Rimini, Italy.
  • Builds software for CNC machinery: HMI systems, CAD/CAM, ISO post-processors and 3, 4 and 5-axis machining logic.
  • Works on applied industrial AI: LLM-based assistants, machine-learning prototypes and troubleshooting automation for CNC environments.
  • Inventor or co-inventor on three software patents in machine control and machine safety.
  • Independent researcher on AI-generated image detection and multi-modal video retrieval.
  • Teaches C++, C# and Python in the "Mechatronics for Business" course at La Città dei Maestri.
  • Writes a newsletter on what happens when AI meets real organisations, at denisbilli.substack.com.

research & patents

paper [independent research]

The Illusion of Robustness

Detectors for AI-generated images are usually reported as a single aggregate accuracy. That number hides a bias: how the training set is balanced across the generators themselves.

StoryHash

Video retrieval has to survive cropping, compression and speed changes without losing semantic accuracy. StoryHash fuses visual, temporal and structural signals into a single compact vector.

optical input

I photograph for the Meeting in Rimini every August and, with BMB.photo, at weddings. What I keep coming back to is structure: what holds a thing up, and how light finds it.
